The military is beefing up security on Android based smart devices and has even issued a grant for $21 million dollars this enhances security around data as it sits at rest on these devices. A few things that need to be considered that I have not seen mentioned in these efforts is how the integrity of data from these devices will be managed in transit. It’s one thing to secure data once it’s on a device it’s another thing to ensure and validate data once it leaves the device. One must consider the critical nature of this content especially as it is being used in a military setting. Are the proper protocols in place to secure encrypt and encapsulate data as it being delivered from one device to another? Other things to consider is what if these devices are lost in battle or perhaps during a trip home by a military personal to visit family. If the data on the device disk is not whole disk encrypted it would be possible for someone to link to the device and pull all boot-strap data including the devices OS even if the OS’s kernel is modified for additional security, and yes even if the device is password protected…Just a thought…
